Volunteer Spotlight: Sean Handa
When it comes to growing the game of basketball in Peterborough, few people have done more than Sean Handa. For the past five years, Sean has poured his energy, skills, and passion into the Peterborough Youth Basketball Association – not just as a coach, but as a leader, organizer, and community builder.
Sean doesn’t just wear many hats – he seems to wear all of them. And he wears them with purpose.
A One-Man Powerhouse for Youth Basketball
Currently serving as Chair of the Board, Sean also runs the association’s social media, coordinates gym bookings, oversees the entire competitive program (20+ teams!), and leads the charge on house league operations. Oh – and he still finds time to volunteer as a coach.
It’s a workload that would typically be divided among several people, but Sean handles it with humility and drive. Why? Because he loves the game – and he wants the next generation to love it too.
Saying “Yes” to Growing the Game
Sean is known for his can-do attitude and willingness to step up wherever help is needed. As one of his nominators put it:
“He always says yes and takes on multiple roles and tasks to help build basketball in Peterborough.”
Whether it’s coordinating teams, mentoring coaches, or stepping onto the court himself, Sean does it all with a focus on youth development and community impact.
Promoting the Players, Uplifting the Community
Sean also understands the power of visibility and recognition. He created the @705basketball Instagram account to highlight and celebrate local players – giving young athletes the spotlight they deserve and fostering a sense of pride in the Peterborough basketball scene.
Through his posts, photos, and updates, Sean brings attention not just to scores, but to stories: stories of growth, grit, and teamwork.
Thank you, Sean, for your tireless commitment to growing the game, mentoring young athletes, and building a vibrant basketball community in Peterborough. You’re not just creating teams – you’re creating lifelong memories, role models, and opportunities.
Nominated by Carrie Truman.
