Volunteer Spotlight: Leigh Ramsay
When YES Shelter for Youth and Families began welcoming back volunteers after the pandemic, one of the first to step forward was Leigh Ramsay. Since November 2022, Leigh has become an essential part of the organization – not just by donating her time, but by fundamentally transforming the way YES supports youth and families in need.
Creating Calm from Chaos
At a time when the shelter’s donation room was in disarray, Leigh’s organizational skills and quiet dedication made a world of difference. She not only restored order, but helped create a donation system that now runs smoothly and serves those who need it most. From linens to hygiene products, Leigh made sure the basics were always accessible – something that might seem small, but in truth, is vital.
Without Leigh’s efforts, the donation room was virtually unusable. For staff, finding essentials like shampoo, soap, diapers, or warm clothing for clients could be a daunting task. But thanks to Leigh’s system and her consistent presence twice a week, those vital items are now within easy reach.
Expanding the Circle of Care
Leigh’s impact goes beyond the walls of YES. With deep connections to other community agencies and charities, she has helped expand the shelter’s network of support. Her ability to bridge organizations has been instrumental in launching new initiatives – like the “At the Door” project, which allows individuals in need who aren’t accessing YES programs to still receive essentials like warm clothing and hygiene kits.
Leigh even makes monthly trips to St. Vincent de Paul (Vinnies), carefully selecting items for the donation room based on the current needs of YES clients. It’s just one example of the countless ways she goes above and beyond.
A Willing Heart in Any Weather
Whether she’s sorting supplies, building partnerships, or braving the elements for community outreach, Leigh shows up. One favorite memory shared by the YES team is of Leigh hosting an information booth at Trent University – undaunted by pouring rain and undeterred by soggy brochures.
It’s this kind of commitment and resilience that sets Leigh apart. She is always ready to help, always ready to serve, and always brings heart to everything she does.
