Volunteer Driver (Havelock)

Be a volunteer driver for Community Care clients to get to medical appointments, treatments, shopping, community services, and social and recreational activities. Most rides take place locally and to neighbouring communities, but transportation to medical appointments outside of the County of Peterborough can be arranged.

In order for us to provide high-quality services, and to ensure the safety of our clients, volunteer screening requirements must be successfully completed.  Our staff member will guide you through the following:

  • personal interview
  • application form(s)
  • criminal reference check
  • personal reference checks
  • drivers abstract (for some positions)
  • proof of valid license and insurance (for some positions)
  • general orientation
  • role-specific training with our local staff

Specific Tasks / Responsibilities
  • Able to work independently and as part of our team
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Possess a valid G drivers license, acceptable driving record, and a minimum of $1,000,000 liability insurance
  • Have a clean and well maintained vehicle in safe mechanical condition
  • Inform your insurance company of your role
  • Sensitive to the needs of seniors and adults with physical challenges
  • Punctual & reliable good listener
  • Patient & compassionate
  • Respectful of confidentiality
  • Cooperative & Trustworthy
  • Familiar with Community Care services
  • Adhering to Code of Conduct Policy and Scope of Volunteer Involvement

  • Confirm drive details with client over the phone
  • Follow safe driving practices
  • Provide minimal assistance (no lifting ortransferring)
  • Collect fees unless otherwise advised
  • Follow Routine Practices for infection control
  • Wear your ID badge visible for clients to identify
  • Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition
  • Report your volunteer hours as requested
  • Report any problems or concerns to a staff member
  • Refer all client requests to the office and decline requests that are not scheduled
    through the office
  • Attend meetings and training opportunities
  • Work within the parameters of your defined role
Goals & Objectives

Dedicated volunteers provide door to door service using their own vehicles. Clients must be able to get in and out of a conventional vehicle safely and independently.

  • A flat rate reimbursement for drivers’ out of pocket expenses such as fuel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance is paid by the client.

Volunteer drivers generously donate their time to provide this service and do not receive payment for their time or accept tips.
