Treasurer

Volunteer Peterborough seeks a Volunteer Treasurer to serve a thre-year term starting in spring 2024. We are looking for a candidate who loves the challenge of setting up systems for the initial years as an independent non-profit as we transition from working with a partner agency to independence. This person will also serve on our board of directors and our finance/fundraising committees, which meet monthly.

Specific Tasks / Responsibilities

The treasurer will offer guidance to the executive and program manager to ensure good fiscal planning, decision-making and oversight at a governance level.
The treasurer’s principal duties in addition to those duties set out in the by-laws of the organization are to:

  • Keep a count of all monies received and distributed by Volunteer Peterborough
  • Ensure all monies are deposited on behalf of Volunteer Peterborough into a chartered bank or credit union
  • Ensure the payment of all accounts and expenses incurred by Volunteer Peterborough
  • Assist the board in setting a budget each year
  • Present or co-present the organization’s financial report and recommend appointment or reappointment of auditor at the annual general meeting.
  • Present interim financial statements to the board as required
  • Ensure the development and board review of financial policies and procedures
  • Alert the board to any important discrepancies between planned and actual figures.
  • Ensure that the organization maintains the appropriate financial books and records and that these are accurate and up to-date.
  • Ensure that the Charitable Information Return and other mandatory reports required by the government are completed and filed on time.
  • Recommend to the board the need for a review or renewal of the auditing services provided.
  • Keep the board informed of important financial events, trends, and issues relevant to the organization.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the board.
Goals & Objectives

The board treasurer is an executive, voting member of the board of directors and appointed in a manner consistent with the organization’s bylaws. The treasurer is automatically a member of the executive committee, and will meet monthly with the board chair, vice chair, secretary and program manager.
