New Service Matches Volunteers and Groups in Peterborough

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Volunteer Peterborough welcomes organizations, teams and individuals to create new movement
PETERBOROUGH – A new service connects more people with relevant causes as Volunteer Peterborough officially launched its online portal for that purpose.
The group has been working behind the scenes for a year to create partnerships for a viable and easy-to- use system for volunteers and organizations. As a result, an online portal works like a dating or employment site to matches skills and times with groups’ needs. As of October 1, these services will also be available in person as well, thanks to an arrangement with the Peterborough Kawarthas Chamber of Commerce.
“Strong volunteerism not only connects the community, but it plays a key role in individuals’ health, career development, economic development and emergency preparedness,” says founder and Steering Committee Chair Lois Tuffin. “With that scope in mind, Volunteer Peterborough has vital partnerships with Trent University’s CareerSpace, the Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, the County of Peterborough, Age-friendly Peterborough and the New Canadians Centre.”
Funding from the Foundation, the County, Telecare Peterborough, OPIRG and various sponsors made this dream a reality. Meanwhile, CareerSpace has projects studying the barriers to volunteering and possible solutions. However, more community support is needed to carry it forward.
Anyone in the Peterborough area can sign up at VolunteerPeterborough.ca to look for roles to suit
them. Organizations and sports leagues can also post listings, although each group must be vetted first. This precaution protects prospective volunteers, particularly students.
