Join our parties during International Year of Volunteers

For the past three years, we have been saying that volunteers can solve any problem when given the right tools and encouragement. Now, it seems the United Nations agrees.

It has designated 2026 as International Year of Volunteers. This marks the first time in 25 years that kind souls who give them time are highlighted in this way.

So, what does it mean for the people of Peterborough?

This year, Volunteer Peterborough is hosting its inaugural Volunteer Appreciation Event on April 22 at the Canadian Canoe Museum. This arises from the generous support of the United Way of Peterborough and District.

Together, we will highlight the fine folks who are so generous with their expertise and time. We can hardly wait to get this party started!

Celebrating International Year for Volunteers

Two weeks later, on May 6, we have a second celebration for the annual Meet Your Match Volunteer Fair. For the past two years, hundreds of volunteers have flooded this event and left with a role in mind or in hand. If your group wishes to participate, we have booths on sale right now.

That’s what we have on the go. But individual volunteers have great power to make a difference as well.

If you have already discovered the joy of working with a non-profit, invite a friend along as well. Some people are reticent to try an experience on their own and would welcome an introduction. Your chosen charity would likely love to have an extra helper!

If you’re still searching for a role, turn to us for help. Each Wednesday, we host drop-in sessions at Venture North from 1 to 3 p.m. There, we can walk you through the menu of options within the 183 Peterborough-area non-profits registered with us.

Sometimes, that personal approach makes all the difference as it boosts your confidence to get the process started. This service resumes on Jan. 14 so come on over.

Meet Your Match online too

Of course, our match-making website is always open for people to visit and browse for opportunities. If you’re a non-profit, you can try it out for free for three months and see how many people you add to your cause.

We have so many success stories that prove it works if you put in an hour initially, then tweak your presence over time. You really have nothing to lose.

For volunteers, we highly recommend creating a profile based on your skills and interests. That way, every time you log in, your account shows you every current role that matches what you want to do – and do well.

Naturally, some people turn to volunteering as a way to enhance their jobs skills and networks. We love that!

Again, the process works better if you commit to it with an account or a visit to our drop-in sessions. The volunteer landscape can feel overwhelming without a guide.
